Secular Humanism is often construed as modern Christianity’s major opponent, and vice versa. In this paper, Philip Almond explores the history of Secular Humanism in the modern West. He argues that it is the result of two key moments in modern Western religious thought. The first of these was the growth of atheism as it emerged out of Christianity in the mid-nineteenth century. The second was the resulting opposition between religion and reason within the twentieth century as the battle lines between Christians and Humanists were theoretically drawn. He suggests that in the post-truth and post-ethics Western cultures of the twenty-first century, Christians and Humanists may have a lot more in common than either of them currently believes.
